Conflict in Georgia

November 2nd, large political demonstrations started in front of the Parliament building from an opposition party to the current government. They started out demanding changes in election schedules and legislation and are now demanding the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili. Only 4 years ago, the Rose Resolution occurred where President Saakashvili, came to power.

The rallies had been peaceful until the opposition party did not have a permit to be in the streets and therefore, could no longer legally block the road. The people refused to leave so the police used batons, water cannons and tear gas to clear the area. Only several hours later, thousands gathered again and the police responded in the same way.

Georgia has been in a State of Emergency since Wednesday which has imposed restrictions on the press, demonstrations, and strikes, among other activities. It’s very difficult to say what will happen next but the President has set Presidential Elections for January 5th and talks are continuing between the different parties.
